Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, standing at an elevation of 8,848.86 meters (29,031.81 feet) above sea level. Located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas along the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, the peak is known as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Chomolungma in Tibet. Formed millions of years ago by tectonic plate activity, the mountain continues to rise slightly each year. It was first successfully summited on May 29, 1953, by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Today, it remains an iconic yet dangerous destination for mountaineers worldwide, who face extreme cold, high winds, and the thin air of the “death zone”
